Welcome to the website of the Monte-Online project, created by the research centre Musica Rudolphina with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the Czech Music Fund Foundation. The project has a challenging goal - to prepare a complete edition of the works of the Franco-Flemish composer Philippe de Monte (1521-1603), who spent the last two decades of his life in Prague as maestro di capella to Emperor Rudolf II.
Despite being one of the most prolific composers of his time, he remains to this day in the imaginary shadow of his contemporaries Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525/26-1594) and Orlando di Lasso (1532-1594). One of the concomitant phenomena of this "overlooking" of Monte's genius is the fact that both planned editions of his works failed. In the present conditions, it is no longer possible to count on such a time-consuming, financially and organisationally demanding project having a chance of success in the form of a "paper" edition. Therefore, we have decided to publish the editions continuously online in the "open access" mode.
The project includes scans of previous editions of Monte's work, which are published with the permission of the original publishers. The Monte-Online project also aims to compile a complete catalogue of Monte's compositions, a bibliography on his life and work, and a discography.
